About
Ty Gibbons is a composer, musician, and teacher living in Southern Vermont. He holds a BA from Harvard University, where he studied the integration of text and music. Ty has scored numerous feature films, feature-length documentaries, television programs, art films, and radio and media sites, including the Frontline episode Terror in Little Saigon (PBS), The Forest for the Trees (Sundance Channel, Human Rights Watch International Film Festival), The Barkley Marathons (Best Documentary Audience Award, Austin Film Festival), and the six-part multi-filmmaker documentary Freedom and Unity: The Vermont Movie. Ty built his own workspace, Red Heart Studios, in Marlboro, VT, where he has recorded with Beth Orton (Anti), Sam Amidon (Nonesuch), and developed or engineered music and audio for such organizations as The Criterion Collection, NPR, and the International Labour Organization.
Ty is co-founder and principal writer for Red Heart the Ticker, an indie-folk band that tours nationally, has garnered praise from the New York Times, Pitchfork Media, No Depression, and Paste Magazine, and has performed live on Garrison Keilor's A Prairie Home Companion. The group's third album, a collection of traditional New England folk songs funded by the Vermont Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts, was featured on NPR's Weekend Edition in January of 2012. Ty has also played bass in concert for such disparate acts as jazz luminary Shelia Jordan, American Idol's Bo Bice, and with the Norwegian pop duo M2M on tour with Jewel.
In addition, Ty has taught songwriting & music media workshops at numerous institutions, including Dartmouth College, Bennington College, and the University of Tennessee. He regularly teaches Songwriting and Music Production classes as an adjunct faculty member at the Putney School in Putney, VT.
